History of 4209 Butler Street

4209 Butler is believed to be constructed sometime between 1873 and 1886. The first renovation of the property occurred before 1910 by its owner, Mr. Spandau. At this point, the 2nd floor was sealed off and the freight elevator was shut down. Sometime later before 1923, the property's ownership changed hands to Mr. Morovitz.

In 1932, the building took on its most well-known form when Isaly's opened its doors selling Klondikes, Chipped Ham, & Skyscraper Cones. Islay's conducted the second remodeling of the building in 1950.

Islay's closed in 1996, and Nova Cafe operated at this location until 2005. The space remained a deli style restaurant known as Pete's Place until 2007. The current owners, Botero Development, purchased the property in 2008 and will complete 4209's third remodel, reopening the 2nd floor as apartments with retail on the first floor.

Lawrenceville is a perfect mix of new and old Pittsburgh. Have a drink in the oldest bar in Pittsburgh or meet a friend at the latest hot spot. Enjoy dinner at a trendy seafood restaurant or stick with a classic fish sandwich.

On historic Butler Street, art and antique galleries sit among neighborhood shops, bars, restaurants, delis, and salons. Other businesses include Arsenal Lanes Bowling, a movie rental shop, and several coffee shops. There is even a vacuum repair shop.

Several blocks away from 4209 Butler, you will find parks, river access, bike trails, a Carnegie library branch, schools, and a yoga and dance center. Lawrenceville is easy to travel around on foot or by bike. There is convenient public transportation to Downtown, the Strip, and Oakland.

Lawrenceville's industrial heritage includes the centerpiece of the industrial revolution. Lawrenceville, along with the Strip District, is the birthplace of the world's aluminum, glass, oil, and air brakes industries, and where Andrew Carnegie first set up shop.
